據 專家考證，朝天門是在戰國時期，秦國著名外交家張儀和三國時期諸葛亮的大將李嚴駐守時所筑土城的基礎上，再由明朝朱元璋的大將戴鼎于明洪武四年(1371 年)擴建大城時建造命名的.因為當時(明代)筑城開門，九開八閉共十七門，只有八門發展為商業碼頭，以這里(朝天門)為最繁榮.朝天，是朝向天子和京師， 迎接皇帝的意思.當年傳遞圣旨和重要公文的驛站，重慶的起點站“朝天驛”就設在這里.當朝廷派來重慶上任的命官、御差，都要齊集朝天門拜謝;離任的命官在 離開重慶時，也在此恭請圣安，后啟程上船.
朝天門因其地勢險要，是重慶歷史上最早的一個古碼頭，而且商務活動興盛，就有人稱朝 天門為“天字第一號碼頭”.在1891年重慶辟立為商埠，朝天門始設海關，因修建朝天門碼頭，就將舊城門撤除.但是在1949年的“九二”火災 使朝天門附近2千米的區域化為廢墟.近年來，隨著重慶的對外開放，三峽工程的上馬和重慶的直轄，這塊不足1平方公里的”彈丸之地”卻越來越令重慶人汗顏， 舊模樣牽動著社會各界的心.

如今大家看到的朝天門廣場由觀景廣場、護岸梯道、交通廣場、周邊環境配套4個部分組成.
大家看剛才我們下車的地方就是交通廣場，它是5.6萬平方米的多層廣場，可停泊270輛車.
觀 景廣場的主體建筑面積6萬平方米，高21.8米，逐層跌落共有4層.層頂廣場，就是我們所站的這個廣場，它的面積1.7萬平方米，是中國最大的層頂公共廣 場.廣場地面鋪著紅、黑大理石和錯色鑲嵌的紅、白、藍廣場磚.廣場上有燈柱、音樂、噴泉、草坪及小葉榕、假檳榔 金橘等.廣場還設有專門的殘疾人道，還保 留著重慶城區僅存的一座纜車.
